The Butterfly Lion

If you loved The War Horse and The Lion King then this is a must see. I'm telling you this in the full knowledge that it is finishing a UK tour in Richmond on the 16th November, but I can't believe it won't end up in the West End.

I was lucky enough to have some tickets for the last performance at Theatre Royal in Glasgow land on my lap due to an accident with a hockey ball and a trip to A and E. I was not disappointed, although the weather was vile and I almost turned them down.

The story about Bertie Andrews is told through his childhood sweetheart and widow, Millie, as she offers tea and scones to Michael, a runaway from the nearby boarding school.

It traces Bertie's life from the plains of Africa, where he rescues a white lion cub promising always to keep him safe, through the trenches of WW1, where he wins the VC, and finishes in the rolling hills of Wiltshire.

The wonderful set and remarkable puppetry, reminiscent of The War Horse, although not as phenomenal, kept all the youngsters engaged in the story within a story. In a moving and impressive climax the lion, entitled The White Prince by the circus owner who bought him from Bertie's father, becomes reunited with his old friend in France and finishes his life with Bertie and Millie in the countryside.
A beautiful story for young and old alike.
